As you get older, it’s more difficult to get around the way you once did in your younger years. For this reason, many senior citizens decide to move to an assisted living facility where they can get assistance taking care of themselves. If you have seniors visiting you or coming to live with you in your home, it’s important that you make sure your home is suited for their needs. Take a look at some of the best tips for making your home design elderly-friendly.

Avoid Rugs

Even though rugs may look lovely, the truth is that they can be a tripping hazard. This is especially true for seniors that get around with a walker or a cane. Their walking device may get caught on the edge of the rug and lead to a serious fall which could even be deadly. Make sure that your floor is flat and free of any obstructions.

Plenty of Light

One of the first things that degrade as you get older is your eyesight. It’s important that the home has sufficient lighting so that seniors can get around safely. Dim lighting conditions can lead to serious injury, so it’s important that you allow plenty of lighting into your home. Make sure that areas like the bathroom and stairs are especially well lit since these can be some of the most dangerous places for senior citizens.

Handrails

You’ve probably heard that handrails in the shower and next to the toilet are standard additions for a senior-friendly home. However, these aren’t the only places where adding handrails can be very helpful. Consider adding handrails in areas where there are stairs or anywhere that require extra effort to navigate around.

Easy To Reach Appliances

It’s not easy for the elderly to have to crouch down or reach high above for appliances. Make sure that your kitchen is fully functional, with everything easy to reach. Older folks shouldn’t have to lift anything heavy or get down in a position that could injure them. Make all drawers and appliances within arms reach to ensure they can get around independently in the kitchen.

Adjustable Chairs and Mattresses

A chair or mattress which is too high or too low can be a struggle for senior citizens to get on and off of. Purchasing adjustable chairs and mattresses will ensure that they can be raised and lowered as needed to make it easy for them to sit or lay on.

By following these tips and being cautious in general, you should steer clear of common senior accidents in the home. If you make safety a priority and stay aware, elderly members of your household should stay safe and secure!
